Sea Trail Byrd Course Review: A Freshly Renovated Gem in Sunset Beach
Your first putt tells the whole story. The ball catches the slope, tracks the break exactly as you read it, and drops into the center of the cup with that satisfying rattle. The new TifEagle greens at Sea Trail’s Byrd Course roll like polished marble — smooth, true, not a single bobble. You look up at your buddy and say what everyone says after their first putt here: “These are NOT the greens I remember.”
That reaction is everywhere at the Byrd Course right now. After a five-month renovation that wrapped in October 2024, almost nothing is the same — the fairways have nearly tripled in width, the bunkers drain like they should, and the GPS carts have Bluetooth speakers. This Sea Trail Byrd Course review covers what changed, what it plays like now, and why a round here has become one of the best values within 20 minutes of our condo at 601 Hillside Dr N.

The 2024 Renovation: What Changed

The Byrd Course renovation was extensive — this wasn’t a quick cosmetic touch-up:
- New TifEagle Bermuda greens replaced the old putting surfaces. TifEagle is a premium ultradwarf variety that delivers smoother, more consistent roll. The difference is noticeable from your first putt.
- Fairways expanded from 14 acres to 40 acres — nearly tripled. For mid-handicappers, this is huge. You have significantly more room to work with off the tee.
- Better Billy Bunker system with G-Angle sand installed in all bunkers for improved drainage. No more standing water after a rainstorm.
- Seven new waste bunkers added for aesthetic and strategic variety.
- New top-of-the-line Club Car carts with Visage GPS and Bluetooth speakers.
- New cart paths throughout the course.
The renovation was led by architect Tim Cate, a Sunset Beach resident who had ties to original designer Willard Byrd. He preserved the course’s DNA while modernizing everything that needed it.
The Course: What to Expect

The Byrd plays to 6,750 yards from the blue tees with a par of 72. Forward tees reach down to around 4,700 yards, making it genuinely accessible for all skill levels. From the back tees, it stretches to nearly 6,800 yards — enough to challenge good players without being punishing.
The layout flows through the Sunset Beach landscape with a nice mix of tree-lined holes — where live oak canopy blocks the morning sun and the air smells like warm pine bark — and more open stretches where the coastal breeze finds you again. The wider fairways from the renovation make it more forgiving off the tee, but the new greens bring the challenge back around the putting surfaces. TifEagle greens are fast and true — you can feel the firmness through your putter sole, and the ball makes a crisp, clean sound rolling across the surface. They reward precision on your approach shots.
All three Sea Trail courses have earned 4-star ratings from Golf Digest, and the Byrd has historically been the strongest of the trio.
The Resort Is Being Reborn

The Byrd renovation is just the beginning. Sea Trail is undergoing tens of millions of dollars in investment:
- Maples Course renovation completed in 2025
- Jones Course renovation planned for 2026
- New Jones-Byrd Clubhouse under construction
- Sunset Prime steakhouse — upscale dining option
- 55 Bistro Bar with 40 large-screen TVs for sports fans
- Village Activity Center with pool and tiki bar
By the time all three courses are renovated, Sea Trail will be one of the most complete golf resort experiences in the Brunswick County area. Playing the Byrd now means you’re getting in ahead of the curve.
The Other Two Courses
While the Byrd is my pick, the Jones and Maples courses are worth knowing about:
- Jones Course (Rees Jones): Wide rolling fairways with water on 11 of 18 holes — you hear the splash of turtles sliding off sun-warmed logs on nearly every approach. The Jones Course renovation is scheduled, and when it’s done, it’ll be a great complement to the Byrd.
- Maples Course (Dan Maples): Winds along scenic Calabash Creek with ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss and Carolina pines that creak in the breeze. A more serene, natural setting where the air hangs thick and sweet with magnolia in late spring. Recently renovated in 2025.
If you’re staying for a multi-day golf trip, playing all three gives you excellent variety without leaving the resort.

Tips for Playing the Byrd
- Take advantage of the wider fairways. The renovation gave you more room — use it. Grip it and rip it off the tee.
- Respect the new greens. TifEagle greens are faster than what you might expect. Lag putting is your friend until you calibrate your speed.
- Try the GPS. The new Visage GPS carts are genuinely helpful for dialing in distances, especially on holes with hidden water.
- Book a resort package. Multi-course packages at Sea Trail are some of the best deals in the area.
- Eat on-site. With the new dining options, you don’t need to rush off after your round.
Who Should Play Sea Trail?
The Byrd Course is ideal for golfers who want quality conditions and a fair challenge without the premium price tag of courses like Tidewater or Thistle. It’s a great fit for mid-handicap players, couples, and groups with mixed skill levels. The expanded fairways keep it enjoyable for higher handicaps, while the new greens give low handicaps something to chew on. Deciding which courses to pair with the Byrd? Those New TifEagle Greens Deserve a Victory Lap — Here’s Where to Take It
Your first putt on the Byrd’s renovated greens will tell you this isn’t the Sea Trail you remember. The roll is smoother, the speed is honest, and those tripled fairways give you room to swing without fear. After 18 holes on a course that feels brand new, you’ll want somewhere equally fresh to unwind. Our place at 601 Hillside Dr N in Ocean Keyes is about 25 minutes from Sea Trail — three bedrooms, a full kitchen for cooking up whatever you grabbed from the Sunset Beach seafood market, and Bluetooth speakers on the balcony so you can keep the vibe going.
