The Big M Casino: Everything You Need to Know Before You Sail

The Big M Casino: Everything You Need to Know Before You Sail

The dock lines hit the water and the horn sounds — one long blast that rolls across the Little River waterfront and scatters a flock of pelicans off the pilings. The yacht eases past the shrimp boats, past the charter fleet, past the last channel marker. Somewhere behind you, South Carolina’s gambling laws are shrinking in the wake. Ahead, the dealer is already shuffling. You’re holding a gin and tonic you didn’t pay for, the sunset is turning the Intracoastal copper, and for the next four hours, you’re in international waters where the blackjack table is legal and the slot machines are real.

The Big M Casino in Little River is the only casino experience in South Carolina — two luxury yachts departing from the historic waterfront, about 15 minutes from our condo at 601 Hillside Dr N. Here’s the honest guide to what to expect before you sail.

How It Works

You board one of two luxury yachts at the Little River waterfront. The boat cruises down the Intracoastal Waterway and out to the Atlantic Ocean — about an hour to reach international waters. Once there, the casino floor opens: table games, slot machines, and all the usual suspects. You game for roughly 2.5–3 hours, then the ship turns around for the ~45-minute return trip.

Plan for about 5 hours total, door to door. That includes boarding, the outbound cruise, gaming time, and the return sail.

What’s on the Casino Floor

Table Games:
– Blackjack
– Craps
– Roulette
– Let It Ride
– 3 Card Poker
– Texas Hold’em

Slot Machines:
– Wheel of Fortune
– Video Poker
– Dozens of additional machines

Important: Cash only for gaming. There is an ATM on board, but bring cash to avoid the fees. Credit cards work at the bar and snack counter.

Two Ships, Two Experiences

The Big M runs two ships:

  • Ship I — Offers a non-smoking option
  • Ship II — Check current policies when booking

One of the biggest complaints in reviews is secondhand smoke, so if that matters to you, confirm which ship offers smoke-free gaming when you make your reservation.

Ship II does not sail on Mondays (subject to change — verify when booking).

Food & Drinks

An optional buffet is available for ~$10/person. Subs and wraps are available during the cruise for ~$10. Drink prices are reasonable — this isn’t a $18-cocktail situation. The bar stays open throughout the gaming session.

The Honest Take

Here’s what you should actually expect:

The good:
– It’s genuinely unique. There’s no other legal casino experience in South Carolina.
– The boat ride is scenic — the Intracoastal Waterway and the open Atlantic are beautiful, especially at sunset on an evening cruise.
– Table minimums are reasonable. You can play for hours without emptying your wallet.
– It’s a fun adults-only date night — something different from the usual beach vacation routine.
– Drinks are affordable.

The real talk:
– Reviews are genuinely mixed. Some love the experience; others find the cruise too long for the gaming time.
– The ~5-hour commitment is real. If you’re not enjoying the gambling, that’s a long boat ride.
– The casino floor is smaller than a land-based casino. Don’t expect a Bellagio-sized operation.
– Seasickness is possible. The outbound trip and gaming area are generally smooth, but some guests report queasiness when the boat stops in open water.

Bottom line: Go in expecting a fun, unique evening experience — not a world-class gambling destination. You’ll have a great time.

Tips for Your Visit

  1. Bring cash. Gaming is cash-only. The on-board ATM works but charges fees. Bring what you’re comfortable losing.
  2. Bring Dramamine. Even if you don’t usually get seasick, the motion when the boat stops in open water can catch people off guard. Take it 30 minutes before boarding.
  3. Make reservations. Especially for evening and weekend cruises. Walk-ups are possible but not guaranteed.
  4. Choose your ship wisely. If smoke bothers you, book the non-smoking ship.
  5. Eat before or after. The on-board food is fine but basic. Consider dinner at one of the Little River waterfront restaurants before or after your cruise — Hurricane Juel’s and Crab Catcher’s are right nearby.
  6. Dress comfortably but appropriately. Casual is fine — jeans, polos, sundresses. No swimwear or muscle shirts.
  7. Set a budget. Decide what you’re willing to lose before you board. The cash-only policy actually helps with this.
